15th September:-Annual Day

We are the Children of Yesterday’s Dream

Borrowing from APJ Abdul Kalam’s timeless saying, “Dream is not that which you see while sleeping, it is something that does not let you sleep,” Anjuman-I-Islam’s Begum Sharifa Kalsekar Girls’ English High School recently held their annual day themed “We are the Children of Yesterday’s Dream” in the school auditorium. The event was graced by eminent dignitaries such as Dr Waseem Ur Rehman, an IRS officer, Waris Pathan, MLA of Byculla constituency, Mr. Athar Salim Qureshi, Secretary General ( Indian Personnel Export Promotion Council) ,Dr. Zahir Kazi, President of Anjuman-I-Islam and many other senior management members of the Anjuman-I-Islam group.

Starting off with a prayer in the name of Allah and a Sanskrit welcome song, the programme moved on to an inspirational presentation explaining and encouraging the audience to dream big. Again citing Kalam’s quote and an array of encouraging images, the school also paid a tribute to their founder, Haji Abdul Razzak Kalsekar, whose message was to “Conduct dreams into reality.” Moreover, they had also revamped the traditional filler system –girls from various grades came on stage and presented their inner talents in the form of poems, speeches, and stories in English, Hindi, and Marathi. The atmosphere was that of a proud one, with excited parents recording the show as their daughters came on stage and confidently did their part. After the chief guests were formally welcomed with bouquets and tokens of appreciation, the girls sang a beautiful Islamic prayer expressing their innate desire to go on pilgrimage and be blessed by Allah.

The annual school report and achievements for the year 2014-15 were also shown, highlighting the school’s attempts to provide their girls with a platform to excel. This was followed by the widely awaited skit, which kick-started on a grand note. The girls enacted the present condition of the children of India – indulging in malpractices like drinking, and how ideals like Mahatma Gandhi would feel if they lived today. The didactic skit left everyone emotional, especially its end, wherein students held white lights in their hands and stood in a formation depicting the map of India. Another commendable aspect, a musical video and mime on the topic “Save the Girl Child” was also showcased, urging the audience to appreciate and raise a girl. The skilled girls depicted a mime to a popular Hindi musical background, depicting how societal pressure forces a family to sacrifice their girl child. Parents, dignitaries, and students in the audience alike were left spellbound by this depiction. Truly magical, it also engraved a message in the minds of all present.

From the start to the end, the programme distribution was efficiently done and the hard work put in by the girls and school was evident. “The performances were just so good, it was hard to get one’s eyes off the girls!” remarked Dr Waseem Ur Rehman. The chief guest, Advocate Waris Pathan whilst praising the programme, also said, “The theme was intelligently chosen. I’m lucky to have such good schools in my constituency which are encouraging the girl child to become the future of India. The programme strengthened my belief that these girls will go on and make our country proud.”

As the programme came to close, Dr. Zahir Kazi, describing Anjuman’s efforts to provide the girls an environment to excel, said, “It is fascinating to see our young girls, their performance, choice of theme, and how the youth are proving to become our role models. The programme focused on so many relevant social issues and showcased so much talent. It’s a pleasure to see how hard the school has worked to help these girls shine like gems.” Headmistress, Ms Fauzia Ansari also described the choice of the theme, “We wanted to have an annual day with a message: to depict that girls, in the near future, will be active global citizens who will change the world for the better.”
