BBC SCHOOL NEWS REPORT

What is the BBC School News Report Project?

The project, run by the British Council in partnership with the BBC, gives 11-16 year-old students the chance to make their own news reports at school and to broadcast these to a real audience via the internet and other media.  The students will create news reports throughout the year and their work will be published on our own school website or on the website of our UK partner school and on the British Council Schools Online website.

The project aims to engage young people with news and international current affairs, hear young people’s voices and stories, and encourage young people to debate the ethics of news-making. The project provides a vehicle for students to improve their communication skills and confidence and to report what’s important to them. It also provides the teachers the opportunity to use digital media to share and showcase the students’ work and have access to high quality educational resources which can be used effectively, even outside the context of the project. You can find out more about the project on the School Report website.

What is the duration of the project?

The duration of the project is November 2011-October 2012. Expressions  of interest is invited from schools and the UK partner schools will have to register on the BBC website. .

Which school can participate in the project?

The project is open to any school in India that has an active ongoing secondary partnership with a school in the UK. About 8 schools from Mumbai have participated for the same. We have  nominated 4 students in the age range of 11-16 years and 1 teacher coordinator along with the registration of our partner school

Our  first milestone of generating a report on “Local Community Issue”. On the path of moving towards this milestone, our school has undertaken the following activities:

We have completed all the six BBC School News Report lessons on each of the stages of making the news

(from the link http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/school_report/resources_for_teachers/default.stm)

We used these lessons to examine a local community issue of our choice.  Local community issue could include environment related matters, misuse or creative use of public spaces in the vicinity, water/ sanitation/ health related issues, impact of increasing prices, controversies related to fee in private sector, any other socia-economic issues etc..

The reports created through these lessons were then  uploaded on our school’sl website by Dec 23rd as the first‘broadcast’. A dedicated page for BBC News School Report project has been created on our own school website.

We have also sent the longitude and latitude for our school’s location to the British Council so that our school can be marked on “Zoom and Click” map on BBC News School Report website where all participating schools across world are marked.
